Clinical Presentation

A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place.

The most common symptom of a hernia includes

  • A bulge in the affected area which became prominent on standing and disappears on lying down. 

  • MIld pain  or discomfort.

Risk factors include:

  • Picking up heavy objects (especially lifting them in the wrong way and with weak muscles)

  • Overuse of the same muscle

  • Strained movement (such as ongoing coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, or constipation)

  • Being overweight or having poor nutrition

  • Use of tobacco

  • Having part of your organ or tissue push through a cut from surgery (incisional hernia)

Preventive measures include

  • Avoiding straining (such as ongoing coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, or constipation)

  • Weight reduction.

  • Avoid lifting heavy weight.

  • Avoid tobacco.

Treatment

  • Laparoscopic Repair using a mesh with small holes.

  • Open repair using mesh.
